What Defines Success... For You?

We hear about it all the time, the buzz words surrounding this seemingly illusive topic called "SUCCESS". I think we all have general ideas about what we think being successful is, but isn't a bit more required? Imagine the following scene, I enter a cab, and the conversation goes like this:

Cab Driver: "where to?" 

         Me: "I'm not sure, just start driving."

Cab Driver: "Look buddy, I need an address or something."

          Me: "Well, I don't have an actual address, but I have a good idea where I                    want to end up."

Cab Driver: "Man, that's not going to work, give me a cross street or                                      something!"

          Me: "Look, I have a general picture in my head of where I need to go.                         Start driving, and I'll know it when I see it."

Well, you get the point. How aggravated would this driver get trying to convince you that he can't take you somewhere, if you don't know where you want to go? And then even if he gave in and began driving, how expensive would this cab ride get before you wound up somewhere you want to be?

I believe everyone's definition of success will be different, but I think each of us need to define it.

So, what's your definition?

Most people are familiar with the passage from Proverbs 23:7, but how do we apply this idea into our lives? I mean do we really believe it, or is it just a nice platitude we use to make ourselves sound spiritual?

Tumbling down the rabbit hole

While cleaning out my DVR recently, I stumbled across The Matrix and it planted a thought that has been bouncing around for a couple of weeks. I have heard and read many Christian's ideas and thoughts related to The Matrix, and I admit that there are things that as a Christian I disagree with from the film. I; however, attempt to approach all things from the perspective of taking from that which can be of value in my life.

As most anyone reading this has no doubt seen the movie, I will forgo any lengthy explanations of plot. Suffice to say that one of the main themes is that things are not always as they seem. As Morpheus reveals the true nature of the Matrix, Neo quickly learns that he is not who he thought he was. His entire perception of himself; his abilities and limitations, his beliefs and fears; were all the result of a cleverly designed program.

What if the same is true for you and I in our lives? What implications does that hold for each of us in our lives? Are we who we think we are or are we simply living in a program that was written, possibly with little of our own input?

Ramblings

Well, I have read that blogging is a good way to get creative juices flowing. So I thought I would give it a try, as I feel my life needs A LOT of creative juice right now.

I find that the more technology I have at my fingertips to make me more "productive", the less productive I seem to be. I wonder what would happen if a study were done taking a group of people accustomed to modern technology, and placed them back a century in the past. Living the way our grandparents or great grandparents did, when people worked the land from dawn to dusk and went to bed tired instead of just bored. It just seems we would find people feeling less restless about life.

Maybe we should all go out and try to get more LIVING out of our lives!
